End of the Trail

Reflection on the End of the Trail sculpture by James Earle Fraser.

End of the Trail
He sits on the back of his trusted friend
head hung low their at trails end
his journey over before it began
being a red man his only sin.

The blood of his father flows through his veins
but the heart of his father never felt such pain
he longs for the time when he was free
to ride the waves of the green prairies.

The sun sets low in the western sky
war paint streaks from the tears in his eyes
his spirit broken its the pain he defies
his spirit broken like the pony he rides.
